About
Fire at Sea is an intimate portrait of life on Lampedusa, an island off the Italian coast that is home to a small fishing community. It is also the frontline of the Syrian refugee crisis. The sea is constant throughout this moving documentary, as both the carrier of traumatised, hopeful people and as an essential source of livelihood for the island community. The film unfolds with images of beauty and the retrained stories of human experience – a counterpoint the political and media hysteria surrounding migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean. In 2016 the film won the Golden Bear— the highest prize awarded at the Berlin Film Festival.
