With his bolted lobes and undersized suit, Boris Karloff as Frankenstein's monster is emblematic of the 'Frankenstein' story. Sets influenced by German Expressionism and reminiscent of Robert Weine's The Cabinet of Dr Caligari 1919 and Fritz Lang's Metropolis 1927, lend this production a distinct theatricality. Key scenes, including Frankenstein's blasphemous 'Now I know what it's like to be God!' exclamation and the murder of a young girl, were cut by international and American censor bodies, only to be restored in 1985.
