About
Vin Diesel’s Fast and the Furious street-racing action series was given a reboot and taken up a notch with Fast Five. The film introduces some key elements to the series which cemented a winning formula: a heist, Dwayne Johnson’s humorously self-aware and formidable police officer character of ‘Hobbs’ and it abandoned all pretence of realistic action stunts instead aiming for gratuitously fun, gravity defying spectacle. A film that at the time had a slew of critics from the New York Times to Rolling Stone confessing that it was a guilty pleasure, Fast Five is, in the words of Manohla Dargis, New York Times Critic, “absurdly entertaining”.
