His films in a certain sense are filmed from the point of view of the wondering child. Just look how grownups live! Look how they abuse each other and themselves. – Christian Braad Thomsen
A personal essay on his friendship with the enfant terrible, Fassbinder: To Love Without Demands is largely comprised of unseen, intimate interviews that Danish filmmaker Christian Braad Thomsen shot of Fassbinder in the 1970s. The two met in 1968, at a screening of Love Is Colder Than Death, beginning a friendship that would span Fassbinder's entire career. Though the tenderness Thomsen has toward his subject is evident, he does not stray from the unsavoury elements of Fassbinder either, particularly in segments with Irm Hermann, who declares, "I was his possession and I was treated accordingly."
