About
Featuring vivid performances by its four leading actresses, 2000 Songs of Farida 2020 opens a window into life on the rural Uzbek steppe. Set in the 1900s, Kamil and his wives have crafted a delicate balance of nuanced relationships – the three wives are the fiery and captivating Robiya, practical and grounded Husiya, dreamy and gentle Mahfirat. Stunning cinematography captures the rugged beauty of the landscape and lingers on the peaceful rhythms of daily life: collecting water, eating food together around the fire and preserving food for the winter months. However, the respected and retired soldier Kamil seeks an heir, and as none of his wives have become pregnant, a new wife Farida arrives upsetting the equilibrium. While family life and its complications slowly unfold in their isolated rural home, a political storm and conflict rages nearby. In the assured hands of director Yalkin Tuychiev, the story gracefully grounds itself in the human experience of the significant historical changes that are foreshadowed, not only for these women but for the greater Central Asian region.
