About
Zarlyk (Aktan Arym Kubat) has been missing for 23 years from his Kyrgyzstani village and returns seemingly unable to speak or remember his family and friends. While old friends try to jog his memory through boozy gatherings, his wife is stricken as she had to marry another man. His adult son, Kubat (Mirlan Abdykalykov), has spent years yearning for his father and is determined to provide a safe and loving home.
A tender portrayal of homecoming and humanity by refined storyteller Aktan Arym Kubat, This is What I Remember boldly examines what the writer-actor-director sees as the competing forces of contemporary Kyrgyz society: traditional Kyrgyz spiritual values involving family connection complicated by burdensome religious influences, and societal corruption.
Ages 15+ | Adult themes, moderate violence
