About
Winner of the Best Director award at the 1978 Cannes Film Festival, Empire of Passion is a dark and moody ghost story from Nagisa Ôshima, director of In the Realm of the Senses 1974. It follows two lovers, Seki and Toyoji, who plot to kill Seki’s husband. In the aftermath of their actions, they find themselves increasingly haunted by guilt and the ethereal presence of the murdered husband. Sumptuously shot by frequent Masaki Kobayashi collaborator Yoshio Miyajima, Empire of Passion is a powerful and at times brutal tale of psychosexual torment.
Please note: this film contains impactful scenes of violence and sexual violence.
