About
A stinging social satire starring a prodigious Jean Arthur, Easy Living adapts an early screenplay from Preston Sturges. The film is premised on an escalating series of misunderstandings, beginning when the struggling Mary Smith (Arthur) has an expensive sable coat accidentally thrown onto her from the roof of financier JB Ball’s penthouse. As an apology, Ball (Edward Arnold) takes Mary to his high-priced milliner, where she is mistaken for his mistress. While scandalous gossip quickly trails her around town, she also finds herself the object of attention for those trying to win Ball’s favour. A charming comedy that is part rags-to-riches fantasy and part incisive class commentary from one of Hollywood’s most skilful screenwriters.
Easy Living will screen from an imported 35mm print.
