About
A hidden gem of Soviet cinema, Gennady Shaplikov's A Long Happy Life is a lyrical companion piece to Jean Vigo's L'Atalante 1934. Geologist Victor meets Lena on a bus and quickly falls for her. They share a night of romance that is nevertheless infused with a fatalistic melancholy. As they consider the promise of a 'long happy life' together, the cruel realities of existence raise their heads. The only directorial effort from acclaimed author and screenwriter Shpalikov, the film is a masterpiece of Khrushchev Thaw cinema.
