The last instalment of the BRD Trilogy and Fassbinder's penultimate film, Veronika Voss is loosely based on the life of German actress Sybille Schmitz. When she was shunned for continuing to act in films during the Third Reich, Schmitz became addicted to morphine at the hands of an unscrupulous doctor and eventually committed suicide. Like Schmitz, Veronika Voss (Rosel Zech) is a once-beloved Nazi starlet, now languishing in relative obscurity but desperate for a comeback. When she meets a reporter named Robert Krohn (Hilmar Thate) in a chance encounter, he becomes captivated by her and the two begin an affair, much to the ire of Krohn's girlfriend (Cornelia Froboess). As Krohn finds himself drawn deeper into Voss's world, he uncovers a shocking secret: a ruthless physician has been plying Voss with opiates as a means to rob her blind. Enlisting the help of his girlfriend, Krohn becomes determined to save Voss from a tragic fate. Taking motifs from Fritz Lang and recalling Sunset Boulevard, Veronika Voss is shot in sumptuous black and white that lends it a particularly authentic feel.
