The Portuguese soccer sensation Diamantino is hunky and warm-hearted — but perhaps a bit simple-minded. After he misses a crucial penalty in a World Cup final, he finds himself a public pariah and at the mercy of his cruel twin sisters. Before long and without realising, he is caught up in the European refugee crisis, a Portuguese nationalist movement and an undercover scheme by the authorities to probe his finances.

Gabriel Abrantes and Daniel Schmidt's Diamantino is a wildly original and blisteringly funny surrealist satire. Carlotta Cotta gives a winsome performance in the title role, inhabiting a genuine sense of innocence while riffing on the image and persona of Cristiano Ronaldo.
