About
Best known for his controversial psychological thriller Possession 1981, Andrzej Żuławski remains an uncompromising visionary and a true maverick of European cinema.
The Devil was the second film by the Polish director, after his debut The Third Part of the Night 1971. Banned by the Polish government upon its release, it is set during the Prussian invasion of Poland in the 1790s. Jakub (Leszek Teleszyński) is imprisoned on charges of conspiracy and treason but is freed by a black-clad stranger (Wojciech Pszoniak), who take flight across a bleak, war-torn winter landscape with a hostage nun (Malgorzata Braunek). They encounter madmen, theatre troupes, and nymphomaniacs, all while bearing witness to a multitude of horrors in this parable of the battle between good and evil.
A powerful vision of a world torn asunder, The Devil is newly restored in 4K, showcasing the visual splendour of its immersive voyage into madness, complemented by an unforgettable psych-rock soundtrack.
