About
Tsai Ming-liang's most recent (to date) feature is a spare, potent examination of isolation, healing and the desire for human connection. In an echo of The River 1997, Kang (Lee Kang-sheng) seeks treatment for his chronic neck pain. Meanwhile, young Laotian immigrant Non (Anong Houngheuangsy) quietly lives and works in Bangkok. Their parallel lives converge for a moment of connection that is both tender and transactional, ecstatic yet powerfully human. Filmed in sections — and initially without a specific narrative frame — Days took shape after Tsai met Houngheuangsy selling noodles in Thailand; the director brought the non-actor into his world (he also appears in Tsai's 'Walker' films Where 2022 and Abiding Nowhere 2024) and uses his camera to contrast the relative youth of the younger man against Lee's ailing form, empathetically exploring the passage of time and the cruelties of aging.
