Rudolph Maté's low-budget thriller about greed and corruption in America begins with accountant Frank Bigelow (Edmond O'Brien) arriving at a police station to report his own murder. He's been poisoned and only has few days to live. As Frank frantically searches for those responsible for his fatal condition – and more importantly, the reason why – he realises he's part of a troubling conspiracy full of menacing characters and bizarre scenarios. Director Robert Siodmak was one of the many German filmmakers who fled the rise of Nazism and brought to Hollywood the aesthetics and conventions of Germany's popular thrillers of the 1930s. Combining these characteristics with a mood of paranoia in post-war America, D.O.A. is a wildly entertaining B-movie and a classic example of film noir.
