Monsters of mindfulness are created by twisting the science of ‘wellness’ in Little Joe 2019 director Jessica Hausner’s latest feature Club Zero.

Fasting guru Ms Novak (Mia Wasikowska) is invited to teach a health class at an elite boarding school. Under the guise of ‘conscious eating’, Novak convinces a group of teenage students to slowly starve themselves to achieve admission into the illusive ‘club zero’.

Making comment on the cult of wellness, Hausner’s vibrant depiction of pseudo-science as a form of mind control explores the toxic culture of privilege and the complex nature of parent-child relationships. Accompanied by a titillating a cappella choral score that’s punctuated with spine-tingling percussion, Club Zero is a riveting take on the dangers of misappropriated scientific knowledge.
