About
Autobiographical in nature, thirteen-year-old girl Christiane F. (Natja Brunckhorst) becomes magnetised by the freedom of 1970s West Berlin’s nightlife. Within the scene, she finds companionship with fourteen-year-old Detlev (Thomas Haustein), as they familiarise themselves with the adult world while lingering around the notorious Bahnhof Zoo station.
A confronting and unrestrained coming-of-age story is captured through a gritty low-budget lens, with the film’s raw portrayal of Christiane’s loss of innocence serving as a compelling story of lost youth. A pivotal figure in the real Christiane F.’s life, the film features a brief cameo by David Bowie performing ‘Station to Station’, as well as composing the film’s spellbinding soundtrack. The presence and musical contributions of ‘The Thin White Duke’ amplify the haunting atmosphere of West Berlin’s underbelly, embedding the story with a sense of time, place and thematic poignancy.
