About
Sari Braithwaite’s [Censored] is an insightful interrogation of film censorship and cinematic spectatorship. While making the 2014 short Smut Hounds with film critic David Stratton, Braithwaite discovered an archive of nearly 2000 clips that had been excised from international films by Australian censors between 1958 and 1971. This experimental documentary collects many of these clips into a collage that delves into the complexities of the male gaze, the complicity of audiences, and the ethical responsibility of filmmakers. It is a mesmerising work that acts as both a self-reflective personal narrative and an exploration of a moment in Australian film history.
Please note: this film contains impactful scenes of violence and sexual violence.
