In Apichatpong Weerasethakul's hypnotic Cemetery of Splendour, a group of soldiers suffering from a mysterious sleeping sickness are treated in a makeshift clinic in northern Thailand. Keng, a volunteer nurse at the clinic, is a spiritual medium who comes to understand that the illness may be connected to the restless spirits warring below them in an ancient burial site. The film is a gentle and at times comic meshing of past and present, of the worlds of gods and mortals and ghosts, sharpened by incisive commentary on the circular afflictions of contemporary Thai politics.
