About
Based on the incident in Mary Shelley’s novel in which the monster asks for a mate, this compassionate, witty and macabre Frankenstein sequel pushes the limits of the horror genre. Frankenstein’s monster (Boris Karloff) has survived the burning mill finale of the 1931 Frankenstein. Dr Praetorius (Ernest Thesiger), Frankenstein’s like-minded former professor, instructs the monster to kidnap his maker’s fiancée to force the doctor start work on a new creation - a ‘bride for his monster'. The bride (Elsa Lanchester), however, does not behave as expected.
In a playfully reflexive script by William Hurlbut and John L. Balderston, Mary Shelley (Also Elsa Lanchester), Lord Byron and Percy Bysse Shelley appear in the film’s prologue to introduce the sequel. Hurlbut and Balderston also grant the monster speech and delve more deeply into the psychology of its creator. With its high production values and Gothic charm, Bride of Frankenstein is widely celebrated as the most intelligently realised and eccentric of the Universal Frankenstein features.
