About
While picking blackberries on the outskirts of her village in the country of Georgia, 48-year-old woman Etero has a near death experience. This shockingly close encounter with death throws Etero into a completely unexpected but wondrous sensual awakening. During a routine delivery of goods to her shop, Etero, almost to her own surprise, begins a passionately erotic and secret romance with married delivery driver Murman. Director Elene Naveriani deftly unravels the complex tensions between tradition and modernity in contemporary Georgia through the character of Etero. A woman who is mocked by the locals in her village for being a spinster yet embraces the blossoming realisation that she no longer needs to live to serve other people and can instead enjoy life on her own terms. Eka Chavleishvili is captivating as Etero, her performance imbuing the film’s gum-booted heroine with an elegant majesty and a resilience tinged with warmth in the face of adversity. Based on feminist writer Tamta Melashvili’s celebrated novel, Blackbird, Blackbird, Blackberry is a tender, funny and thoughtful look at romance and the blessings of aging.
