A depraved blacker-than-black comedy, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans foists Nicolas Cage's cop into a mass-murder investigation taking place in the chaos of post-Katrina New Orleans. As his addictions and perverse needs pile up, Cage's character struggles to stay one step ahead of the increasingly complex case.

Herzog has repeatedly stated that the film has no connection to Abel Ferrara's cult classic Bad Lieutenant 1992, other than the fact that a "corrupt policeman as the central character", and the grim tragedy of Harvey Keitel's protagonist in Ferrara's film is a world apart from the gleeful immorality of Cage's lieutenant. Cage has rarely been as potent on screen as he is in this film, with his wild-eyed commitment driving the ferocious energy of the film. He is ably supported by a cast including Eva Mendes, Val Kilmer and Brad Dourif in this macabre, psychedelic neo-noir.
