Bubby has lived his 35 years entirely within the bounds of his family home. Told by his mother that the world outside their house is enveloped in toxic gas, the two live together in squalor, with only their pet cat as company. When his abusive father unexpectedly arrives home after decades away, Bubby’s creative use of clingwrap means that he is suddenly thrust out into a society that he doesn’t understand – and which certainly doesn’t understand him.

A controversial classic of Australian cult cinema, Bad Boy Bubby is a darkly satirical odyssey of self-discovery. Nicholas Hope delivers a transformative performance in the title role, embodying both the trusting innocence and feral violence contained within Bubby. Director Rolf de Heer employed experimental formal techniques – including utilising 32 different cinematographers and custom binaural audio recording – to capture the overwhelming sensorial experience of entering an intimidating world for the very first time.
