The final entry in Miguel Gomes's Arabian Nights enchanting trilogy of a people and a nation laid low by economic injustice. The films' narrator, Scheherazade, takes a break from storytelling to visit her father at a dilapidated seaside Ferris wheel, before delivering one final extended chronicle about a group of men training their finches for a singing contest. This volume, like the others, is shot on a vivid combination of 16mm and 35mm film by Sayombhu Mukdeeprom (the regular cinematographer of Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul) who uses the camera to paint a dreamy portrait of contemporary Portugal. 'The Enchanted One' is a fitting conclusion to a trilogy of inventive whimsy, hardship and fiery political castigation.
