About
The year is 2034 and Southeast Asia has been enveloped in permanent darkness for the past three years, due to a volcanic eruption in the Celebes Sea in 2031. With the sun completely covered and the country isolated, the Philippines finds itself under the ruling of a self-imposed dictator, President Nirvano Navarro (Joel Lamangan), who subjects citizens to a relentless state of oppression.
A chilling commentary on a speculative future, the film’s low-budget digital aesthetics merge with relatable humanist struggles to poetically explore life under near-future fascist rule. Through its stark black-and-white cinematography and various sci-fi monitoring technologies, The Halt is a haunting piece of slow-cinema that imagines a future filled with political unrest and turmoil, presented with undeniable grandiosity within its small-scale character-driven narratives.
