When inflatable sex doll Nozomi (Bae Doona) develops consciousness and comes to life, she uses her newfound agency to explore the world around her while her erstwhile owner Hideo (Itsuji Itao) is at work. Nozomi’s sheer delight at the prosaic beauty of Tokyo’s urban environment and curiosity for its people capture the interest of video store clerk Junichi (Arata lura) and the two become romantically involved. Soon Nozomi comes to realise that relationships are not without their sharp edges, and she must confront the deflating reality of what it means to be human.
