Below the jazzy hum underpinning Angolan director Fradique’s debut feature – about the search for an elusive air conditioning unit – is an incisive political critique set against a cityscape unstuck in time and awash in civil war memories.
The surreal quest of veteran-turned-security guard Matacedo (José Kiteculo) and maid Zezinha (Filomena Manuel) through the labyrinthine alleys of Angolan capital Luanda leads them to the workshop of the enigmatic Mino (David Caracol), who patches up air conditioners that are falling from buildings in a spate of sometimes fatal accidents. Fradique contrasts corrupt authoritarianism against the lively soundscape of the city, invoking a place teetering on the edge of magical realism.
