About
Tsai Ming-liang’s tenth and to-date most recent entry in the ‘Walker’ series reunites Anong Houngheuangsy (co-star of Days 2020), as an aimless observer of a new city, and Lee Kang-sheng in his persona as a Buddhist monk engaged in an epic feat of slow walking and internal focus. The title of the film is taken from a line in the Diamond Sutra “Abiding nowhere, gives rise to mind” – a reflection that our hearts are not in fact trapped by worry, but are free to roam.
Commissioned by Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art for its centennial, Tsai shot the film between both the cinematic landmarks and more obscure spaces of Washington DC, with the Walker and Anong both finding themselves amongst the ancient Buddhist carvings held in the Smithsonian.
