In a remote mountain village in Ming dynasty China, unassuming scholar and painter Ku is shaken from his doldrums by the arrival of the mysterious Yang, a fugitive noblewoman on the run from the corrupt government officials who murdered her family. Together with her personal swordsmen and a venerable troupe of fighting monks, Ku and Yang must employ strategy and force to overcome the powers poised against them.

Having helped establish the contemporary cinematic language of wuxia cinema with his earlier films Come Drink with Me 1966 and Dragon Inn 1967, legendary Chinese filmmaker King Hu reached new heights with the visionary epic A Touch of Zen. Brimming with flying, floating and leaping bodies that exaggerate the qinggong martial arts technique, the film’s aerial acrobatics include a spectacular flying swordfight in a bamboo forest that would quickly become emblematic of the entire genre.
