About
Screens with Tarnation 2003.
Sadie Benning began making videos at the age of 16, using a Fisher-Price Pixelvision 2000 toy camera to produce intensely autobiographical works about her experience of growing up as a lesbian in the Midwestern city of Milwaukee. Using handwritten intertitles and basic editing, Benning's videos have a diaristic, DIY aesthetic, and record powerful narratives of isolation, self-awareness and love. A Place Called Lovely refers to the types of individual violence, from actual beatings, accidents and murders to the more insidious violence of lies, social expectations and betrayed faith. Sadie Benning collects images of socially pervasive violence from a variety of sources, tracing events from childhood.
