About
Composed of a series of awkward and darkly comedic vignettes, A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence moves between the absurd and the audacious to make comment on the nature of life and existence.
In what appears to be a natural history museum, a taxidermy pigeon stares out at the world from its perch on an artfully positioned tree branch. The pigeon in this instance, isn’t so much the title character, but rather a symbol of the film’s principle aim which is to encourage audiences to stop and reflect (somewhat comedically) on lived experiences and the moments that make us human.
The final instalment in director Roy Andersson’s ‘Living Trilogy’ (that also includes the films Songs from the Second Floor 2000 and You the Living 2007) and winner of the Golden Lion for Best Film at the 71st Venice International Film Festival, this highly compelling film drifts in and out of multiple scenarios, slowly revealing their subtle interconnectedness.
