Daihachi Yoshida’s A Beautiful Star 2017 tells the story of a television weather presenter, who, after witnessing an alleged UFO, believes he is an extraterrestrial sent to Earth to warn of the impending climate emergency.

Using absurdity as a type of counter-distancing effect, Yoshida masterfully uses the veil of humour to create thought-provoking commentary on the current climate emergency, resulting in a passive, but poignant, call to action. Based on the 1962 novel by Yukio Mishima, the boundaries of science-fact and science-fiction are blurred in this surrealist family drama that ultimately addresses broader themes of delusion, desire and denial.
