About
To accompany The China Project's survey of three decades of contemporary Chinese art from the Gallery's collection, the Australian Cinémathèque profiles three filmmakers whose work defines the key transitions in the emergence of a vibrant and hugely successful contemporary Chinese cinema.
Highlights of the program will include 24 City 2008, the latest release from internationally acclaimed 6th generation director Jia Zhang-ke, who won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 2006 with his feature Still Life. In addition, 5th generation director Zhang Yimou's signature use of saturated colour will fill the big screen in his epic tales Hero 2002 and Raise the Red Lantern 1991 as well as the much celebrated senior director Xie Jin, whose classic Stage Sisters 1965 considers the changing role of women in 20th Century China.
QAGOMA acknowledges all the archives, filmmakers and distributors who have generously provided screening materials for this program. In particular, the support of the National Film and Sound Archive Australia and Chinese-Taipei Film Archive. Program curated by José Da Silva, Australian Cinémathèque. Film notes are abridged; sources are indicated.
