Join Professor Barbara Creed, Redmond Barry Distinguished Professor, University of Melbourne as she discusses themes of evolution and empathy in cinema, literature and human–animal ethics. The talk will be accompanied by a screening of Nicolas Philibert's intimate documentary Nenette 2010 about a 40-year-old female orangutan who has spent her life in captivity at the Managerie du Jardin des Plantes Zoo in Paris.

This special talk and screening is held in conjunction with the Curious Affection – Film Program.

Professor Barbara Creed is the author of five books on feminism, sexuality, film and animal studies: The Monstrous-Feminine: Film, Feminism, Psychoanalysis 1993; Media Matrix: Sexing the New Reality 2003; Phallic Panic: Film, Horror and the Primal Uncanny 2005; Darwin's Screens: Evolutionary Aesthetics, Time and Sexual Display in the Cinema 2009; and Stray: Human–Animal Ethics in the Anthropocene 2017. Creed was elected to the Australian Academy of the Humanities in 2006 and is currently the director of the Human Rights and Animal Ethics Research Network at the University of Melbourne.
