About
During the period 1963–68, Andy Warhol worked in film as a primary artistic medium and produced approximately 600 films, including nearly 500 individual Screen Tests 1964–66 and more than 60 released titles. Drawing inspiration from Hollywood and underground cinema, avant-garde performance and theatre, pornography, portraiture and Minimalism, Warhol made films that redefined genres and explored the limits of the moving image. The Australian Cinémathèque's program of restored films and Screen Tests from the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, acknowledges this important aspect of Warhol's artistic practice and follows the development of his filmmaking from minimalist films, to scripted and improvised narratives, experiments with multiscreen projection and his celebrated underground feature film productions.
The Andy Warhol program includes all the films restored by MoMA to date, courtesy of the MoMA Film Collection and the Circulating Film Library.
'Andy Warhol' curated by Kathryn Weir and Jose Da Silva with accompanying film notes by Kathryn Weir (KW) and Jose Da Silva (JDS). - ANDY WARHOL SCREEN TESTS
- The Screen Tests are silent film portraits made between 1964 and 1966 that document the New York arts scene and visitors to the Factory. Emulating still photography in their composition and minimal movement, Screen Tests also record the psychological and emotional responses of sitters asked to remain motionless before Warhol's camera. Filmed with a 16mm Bolex movie camera and shot on 100 feet of black-and-white film, Screen Tests were projected at 18 fps to protract their duration to approximately four minutes. A total of 472 Screen Tests have been catalogued and 279 preserved to date by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, all of which are screened in the Australian Cinémathèque film program.
