‘All in a Day’s Work’ considers the pivotal role of work in our lives. With an impending robotic revolution, our increasing reliance on artificial intelligence and the recent shifts dictated by the pandemic, the nature of work is predicted to change significantly. This film program reflects on the ways that occupations shape our relationships, our social mobility and our self-image, and examines the intersections of work and living conditions. Across this selection of documentary and feature films, we see careers lead to empowerment and redemption as well as destruction and isolation. Themes explored include the value of paid and unpaid jobs, class structures, the shifting role of women in the workplace, human rights and conditions of labour, and the unseen and unsung work that goes on all around us. Films in this program include Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times 1936, Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin in 9 to 5 1980, Bicycle Thieves 1948 directed by Vittorio de Sica, Hayao Miyazaki's Kiki's Delivery Service 1989 and Black Girl 1966 by Senegalese filmmaker Ousmane Sembène.
