About
To coincide with the major summer exhibition '21st Century: Art in the First Decade' at GoMA, the Gallery's Australian Cinémathèque presents three major cinema programs. The first is a major program of films that explores visions of the future throughout cinema history. A New Tomorrow: Visions of the Future in Cinema includes science fiction favourites and cult classics, charting alternative scenarios for civilisations to come and extraordinary explorations of new spaces, dimensions and frontiers in cinema. The program culminates in an exclusive live audiovisual remix of Blade Runner by sound artist Zan Lyons on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 February 2011. Other 21st Century Cinema programs include Unseen: New Cinema in the 21st Century showcasing new voices in contemporary cinema and Video Witness: News from the World exploring the use of digital technologies as tools in protecting human rights.
A New Tomorrow: Visions of the Future in Cinema features allegorical and often prescient films which envision possible futures. By emphasising the endless possibilities for a changing world, the program charts alternative scenarios for the future and new spaces, dimensions and frontiers in cinema. Such cinematic visions often draw on the narratives and archetypes of science fiction literature and graphic novels, and make propositions for humanity linking questions about the unknown and advances in science to speculation about human evolution and destiny. These films visualise the blurring interface between human and machine, the consequences of environmental and biological change, anxieties over surveillance and the integration of simulations into the real world, as well as the collapse of social orders and the oppression of totalitarian political systems. At the same time, they demonstrate the agency for humanity to adapt, reinvent itself and find new solutions. The program plays out the audience's hopes and fears, imaginatively prefiguring the future onscreen: from the schisms of industrialisation in Fritz Lang's wondrous city of the future in Metropolis 1927; to the epic philosophical ideas of human evolution and the expansiveness of deep space in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey 1968; mediations on the human condition in Andrew Niccol's Gattaca 1997; the rethinking of spirituality and cosmology in Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain 2006; the world of cyberpunk replicants and bodily mutations in Ridley Scott's Blade Runner 1982 and Shinya Tsukamoto's Tetsuo II: Body Hammer 1992; and, ultimately, to the post-apocalyptic dystopias of Alfonso Cuaron's Children of Men 2006 and George Miller's Mad Max 1979, and the totalitarian super states of Terry Gilliam's Brazil 1985.
Zan Lyons vs Blade Runner AV
Don't miss this exclusive audio-visual performance by Berlin-based filmmaker and sound artist Zan Lyons. With an international reputation for his uncompromising recordings and live shows, Lyons will perform with viola, foot pedals and laptop while simultaneously remixing and reworking Ridley Scott's Blade Runner 1982. Lyons has completely rewritten the film's legendary electronic score by composer Vangelis, and re-edited several scenes with his own visuals to achieve a dark and chaotic spectacle.
