The Asia-Pacific Triennial has cultivated genuine cultural interchange within the region, gaining an international reputation for its significant contribution to the continuing discourse on contemporary art practice. Western notions of time, the historical context of contemporary art, and the language of art criticism were all re-encountered and re-defined by speakers at the Present Encounters conference, held for the 'Second Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art' in 1996.
