Library Collections

The Gallery Research Library has over 30 000 monographs and exhibition catalogues, and 300 current journal titles. The Research Library has a particular emphasis on resources which support the Gallery's Collection and programs. Materials in all formats ― books, exhibition catalogues, journals, ephemera and audiovisual materials ― are held.  The Library's catalogue is now available online.

While the Library has a selection of resources on British, European and American art, the main collecting areas are:

Australian art

The Library collects widely on Australian art, including Indigenous Australian art, contemporary Australian art and Queensland art.

Asian and Pacific art

The Library has a growing collection of some 10 000 items on contemporary and modern Asian and Pacific art. The Library extensively collects exhibition catalogues, books, journals, invitations, press cuttings, videos, DVDs, slides, and other material, about art and artists of South-East Asia, East Asia, the Indian subcontinent and the Pacific region.

Resources developed by the Library include a database and files on Asian and Pacific artists. The Library also holds recorded performances, interviews with, and talks by, artists, including those presented during the Asia–Pacific Triennials of Contemporary Art.

There is also a small but growing collection of resources on historical Asian art.

The Asian and Pacific resources support the Australian Centre of Asia–Pacific Art  (ACAPA), the research arm of the Gallery's Asian and Pacific activities.

Special Collections

The Library holds a number of Special Collections including the surrealist documentary material, from the James C Sourris Collection

Exchanges

The Queensland Art Gallery Research Library exchanges Gallery publications with similar libraries and organisations worldwide. The publications received on exchange contribute to the Library's research resources.
