Dave Graney (7.30pm)

In the late 1970s, South Australian-born musician Dave Graney and partner Clare Moore were interested in punk music, with Moore playing drums and keyboards. Since the 1980s, Melbourne-based Graney has initiated a number of bands, including The Moodists (1980-1987), The White Buffaloes (1989-90), Dave Graney ‘n’ the Coral Snakes (1987-97), The Dave Graney Show (1998-03) and most recently Dave Graney and Clare Moore...featuring the Lurid Yellow Mist (from 2004).

In 1995 Graney won an ARIA award for Best Male Vocalist for The Soft and Sexy Sound of Dave Graney 'n' the Coral Snakes (1995, Mercury), and was nominated for the same award in 1997. He composed and performed the film score Bad Eggs (Director: Tony Martin, 2003), which was nominated for an ARIA award for Best Soundtrack Album.

Graney’s 21st, and first official solo, release Knock Yourself Out – an ‘electro boogie/ filthy r&b album’ – will be released in June 2009. The album will feature acoustic and electro and R&B.

‘Watching Graney strut, pose, tap and skulk across the stage leaves you in no doubt that the man is a great entertainer. Think Tom Waits with a vibrato, jumpsuit and knuckleduster bearing the legend 'DAVE'’. (Anais Chevalier, The Independent Weekly, 2008)

Kim Salmon (8.30pm)

Kim Salmon was instrumental to the success of several iconic Australian bands. In 1978 he was the founding member singer, guitarist and songwriter of Perth punk band The Scientists, who have been frequently acclaimed as the first ‘grunge’ artists. Although the group officially disbanded in 1987, The Scientists continue to enjoy cult success through rare shows performed in Australia and internationally.

In 1983 Salmon, along with vocalist Tex Perkins and other musicians such as Spencer P. Jones, formed the Beasts of Bourbon. Salmon played lead guitar and composed several of the group’s songs such as ‘Dropout’, ‘Save me a place’, ‘Just right’, ‘The low road’ and ‘Chase the dragon’.

Salmon initiated the instrumental group ‘Salmon’ in 2005, featuring other well known Australian musicians such as Clare Moore and Dave Graney. Rock Formations (2007, Bang! Records) is the most recent release for the group.

In 2004, Salmon formed The Darling Downs with Ron Peno (Died Pretty) – a combination of guitar and voice grounded in country music. The pair released the independent record How Can I forget this heart of mine in 2005.

Kim Salmon’s solo music has been realized in albums such as E(a)rnest (2002, Half a Cow Records). Salmon’s solo performances often feature the artist with acoustic or electric guitar, or playing instrumental pieces on heavily distorted guitar along with tape loops on his Dictaphone. These intimate solo arrangements bring to life Salmon’s diversity as a musical performer.
