Bob Evans (8.30pm)
Bob Evans is the stage moniker of Perth-born singer–songwriter Kevin Mitchell. Mitchell formed the alternative rock band Jebediah in 1994 and the group’s debut album Slightly Odway (1997, Murmur) produced several singles including ‘Leaving home’, ‘Military strongmen’ and ‘Harpoon’. They have since released a further three albums and toured nationally with major music festivals.
Following the release of the Jebediah album Braxton Hicks (2004), Mitchell began playing solo music as Bob Evans, a name he created several years earlier to play incognito solo performances in Perth. Mitchell has released three Bob Evans albums, including Suburban Kid (2003, Redline Records) and Suburban Songbook (2005, EMI). Suburban Songbook won Best Adult Contemporary Album at the 2006 ARIAs and was shortlisted for the Australian Music Award. The album featured popular singles such as ‘Nowhere without you’.
Goodnight Bull Creek! (2009, EMI) is the artist’s third solo album. The title refers to the town in which Mitchell spent most of his youth. The album was recorded in Nashville, with producer Brad Jones (Yo La Tengo, Sheryl Crow), and gathered together several musicians, including guitarist Will Kimbrough, vocalist Melissa Mathers and drummer Ken Coomer (ex-Wilco), to produce a live ‘band’ recording sound in contrast to the acoustic nature of previous Bob Evans albums.
At Up Late, Bob Evans presents songs from his recent release Goodnight Bull Creek! and previous albums.
