Kate Jacobson (Texas Tea) (7.30pm)

Texas Tea is the partnership of Brisbane musicians Kate Jacobson and Benjamin Dougherty. Their style of ‘alt’ (alternative) country has earned the duo accolades, including being selected as finalists in the 2006 Q Music Awards for their debut recording Take a sip. Their most recent release is The junkship recordings (2008). Live Texas Tea shows are known for adept use of various instruments on stage – with the two members switching between vocals, guitars, harmonica and percussion.

Texas Tea has played with international performers including Iron and Wine, The Handsome Family, Jeff Lang, Kim Salmon and Ron Peno’s The Darling Downs and many others, and have toured Germany, The Netherlands and France.

At The Met Up Late, Kate Jacobson plays a solo set of songs including those from the recent release The junkship recordings.

‘What really makes alt.country interesting – from a subjective perspective, that is – is when it brings with it an aesthetic that transcends the music itself, and lends itself to a broader artistic and cultural aesthetic. Or something like that. Whatever it is, Texas Tea do it.’ (Patrick Emery, Beat, 17 December 2008)

Ben Salter (The Gin Club) (8.30pm)

As singer-songwriter of Brisbane musical collective The Gin Club, Ben Salter’s work is an eclectic mix of rock, pop, folk, blues, country and progressive rock. Since forming in 2003 The Gin Club have released three albums and toured Australia, the United States, Canada and New Zealand, and played with a range of musicians including Paul Kelly, the Drones, Tim Rogers, Iron and Wine, and Lambchop.

In 2008, Salter won Best Rock Song and Song of the Year for ‘Ten paces away’ and Best Folk Song or Ballad ‘You, me and the sea’, from the The Gin Club’s recent album, Junk (2008, Shock Records) at the Q Music Awards. Junk is a double album featuring 26 original songs by 7 singer–songwriters.

While The Gin Club’s live performances can feature up to nine members on stage, at The Met Up Late Ben Salter will perform a solo set of songs including those from the recent release Junk.

‘Salter also has a successful solo career, playing a unique blend of happy hardcore folk rock on a borrowed guitar or as he calls it ‘another miserable song’. This is a unique blend of country music on a Fender Stratocaster, original, unusual and thought provoking, with the highlights being ‘Ten paces away’, the Beatles cover ‘Oh darling’ and the haunting ballad ‘You, me and the sea’.’ (Smokestack Orchestra, White Mansions, Ben Salter @ The Troubadour, Brisbane, fasterlouder.com.au, 24 September 2008)
