First look - new to the Collection

On selected Sundays, be one of the first to hear about the Gallery’s new acquisitions with our special focus on ‘21st Century: Art in the First Decade’ works.

Sunday 30 January 11.30am
Meet in Foyer, GoMA
Rosie Hays, Associate Curator, Australian Cinémathèque, talks about animated documentary It’s like that 2003 by the Southern Ladies Animation Group (SLAG). The work tells the story of three children held in an Australian immigration detention centre who dream about the outside world. Told through puppet birds, It’s like that presents their stories and reflections on life as asylum seekers.

Sunday 27 February 11.30am
Meet in Foyer, GoMA
Naomi Evans, Assistant Curator, International Art, talks about Tsui Kuang-Yu’s video trilogy Shortcut to the Systematic Life 2002–05. Recorded in Taipei and London, Tsui’s short ‘action videos’ exaggerate conventions of public behaviour and city spaces and reveal, through wit and humour, some of the absurdities of urban living.

Sunday 3 April 11.30am
Meet in Foyer, GoMA
Nicholas Chambers, Curator, International Art, talks about Carsten Höller’s installation for ‘21st Century’, Left/Right Slide 2010. Described by the artist as a ‘happiness-producing machine’, the slides have an elegant, sculptural presence at the entrance to the exhibition and allow visitors to participate in the work, sending them hurtling between the Gallery’s third floor and ground level.
