Ricky Swallow | Australia/United States b.1974 | Killing Time 2003–04 | Laminated Jelutong, maple | 108 x 184 x 118cm (irreg.) | Rudy Komon Memorial Fund and the Contemporary Collection Benefactors 2004 | Collection: Art Gallery of New South Wales | Killing time resurrects the time-consuming craft of woodcarving in a composition derived from Dutch still-life painting of the seventeenth century. Its nostalgia is personal, Swallow has remade the kitchen table of his childhood home in San Remo on Port Phillip Bay in Victoria and covered it with the sea-life he caught and killed throughout his youth.
