During 'Modern Woman', take the opportunity to explore the contributions of some of the major French artists of the late nineteenth century, and gain insight into the progressive social backdrop from which these works emerged.

Music in the Gallery

Selected Sundays 25 March, 1 April, 13 May (Mother's Day) & 17 June | 2.30pm | Watermall, QAG | Free, no ticket required

Live classical music in the Gallery's Watermall transports visitors to the boulevards of nineteenth century Paris, through the sounds of composers of the age, from Debussy to Ravel and Satie. Experience how some of the most progressive music was made by composers of the era, alongside the artists on display.

Paris in changing times – Exhibition floortalk series 

1.30pm selected Sundays | The works in 'Modern Woman' reflect and celebrate the changing roles of women in the Belle Époque. Informal weekend afternoon talks consider the radical changes and influences in women's lives at the time the works on display were created.

Sunday 13 May (Mother's Day) | Dr Jess Berry, Lecturer in Art Theory (Queensland College of Art, Griffith University) explores the radical transformation of womens' dress as depicted in the works on display

Artists of the Belle Époque
Sunday 17 June |
Art historian Professor Nancy Underhill introduces the exhibition through the contributions of the artists on display towards making changes in French art of the period.

1.00pm selected Saturdays | Lecture Theatre, QAG | Free, no bookings required | Attend these illustrated talks to gain a greater understanding of the social and historical contexts of 'Modern Woman', with a focus on Paris.

Paris - The modern city
Saturday 5 May | At a time of profound social change and revolution, Paris emerged as the cultural capital of the modern world. Art historian Anthea Callen, Professor of Art (Australian National University, Canberra) paints a picture of the beloved city of Paris at the time of the Belle Epoque, with a focus on some of its most renowned artists and their representations of women.

Share the passion for Parisian architecture and its modern transformations with Dr Antony Moulis, Senior Lecturer in the School of Architecture (University of Queensland).

Literary Paris
Saturday 2 June 1.00pm |
French poet and writer Charles Baudelaire focused on the 'modern life' of industrial Paris in the nineteenth century. Peter Cryle, co-author of Sexuality at the Fin de Siècle (2008) and author of The Telling of the Act: Eroticism as Narrative in French Fiction of the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries (2001) explores the ways in which French popular fiction tackled the subject of sexuality.

See the exhibition from a curator's perspective with in-depth tours and conversations. Talks are held in the 'Modern Woman' exhibition spaces. 

Thursday 19 April | 1.00pm | Join Ellie Buttrose, Curatorial Assistant, Exhibitions and Research, for a tour looking specifically at the women artists represented in the exhibition. 

Wednesday 30 May | 1.00pm | Angela Goddard, Curator, Australian Art to 1975, reflects on social change and upheaval in European society at the time of the Belle Époque, as represented in the works on display.
