Enliven a visit to the ‘Contemporary Australia: Women’ exhibition through attending one of the range of free programs and events on offer, exploring contemporary Australian art through the perspectives of artists, curators and commentators. 

New art perspective: Exhibition Floortalks

The new commissions and recent works featured in ‘Contemporary Australia: Women’ show the richness, diversity and relevance of today’s contemporary art. See how these works can become a platform for discussing a range of ideas, from sustainability to perspectives on womens’ roles in a changing society. 

New Art: Writers and thinkers 

Local writers and academics explore works in the exhibition through the lens of current ideas.

2.30pm Thursday 26 April

Jane Morley, fashion designer, consultant and researcher with a specific interest in sustainability, investigates a return to use of particular materials in selected works on display. 

2.30pm Wednesday 30 May

Feminist cultural critic Dr Anthea Taylor from The University of Queensland explores the links between art works in ‘Contemporary Australia’ and the place of women in the public sphere.

New Art: Artists 

Artists share the stories behind the making of works in the exhibition. See how women artists have reshaped the landscape of contemporary Australian art.

Judy Watson used the histories of Queensland frontier life from the point of view of five generations of Indigenous women in her family to create her installation In our skin 2012 on display.

3.00pm Sunday 17 June

Natalya Hughes shares the evolution of her work over a decade to include her installation ‘The after party’ set within a parlour room space in the exhibition referencing the work of American feminist artist Judy Chicago.

Learn about the development of ‘Contemporary Australia: Women’ with Gallery curators.

The lives and work of senior Indigenous women artists is a compelling aspect of the ‘Contemporary Australia’ exhibition. Hear about the works and artists with Diane Moon, Curator, Indigenous Fibre Art.

New Wave Emerging

Programs and events for tertiary students, emerging artists, writers and curators. 

Critical session 

June 2012 

The experience and advice provided by exhibiting artists is invaluable for emerging practitioners. The New Wave Emerging program provides students and young artists, writers and curators with the opportunity to hear directly from practicing artists, and engage with ideas concerning their own contexts.
